Denver, CO Market Overview
HealthLeaders Interstudy, May 2011
Denver has a big head start when it comes to healthcare given its healthy and wealthy population. The payoff is seen in its highly profitable hospitals, which have the added benefit of a renowned public hospital to provide care for Denver’s plentiful uninsured, allowing private hospitals to spend their dollars solidifying market dominance through expansions. Health plans are also racking up surpluses as commercial enrollment grows. Benefitting less are employers, whose health insurance premiums are higher and increasing faster than the national average, and pharmaceutical companies, which face not only the lowest demand for their products of any state in the country but a crackdown on their relationships with physicians by both legislators and hospitals.
Questions answered in this report:

With more than $2.5 billion worth of facility expansions coming online over the next few years, what concerns have been raised by industry insiders? Which health system is participating in a payment bundling program? Which health system is partnering with a large managed care organization on a telemedicine program?
The physicians sector in Denver remains strongly independent, but there is some movement toward integration with health systems. Which large physician group in the market is moving toward global capitation contracts with payers? Are physician groups looking to partner with health systems on outpatient facilities? Which large physician groups are gearing up to form accountable care organizations?
