Honolulu, HI Market Overview
HealthLeaders Interstudy, March 2011
The Honolulu market is not waiting for national healthcare reform deadlines and has begun to implement various tenets of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Most notably, the market’s largest health insurer—Hawaii Medical Service Association—has teamed up with health systems in Honolulu and Hawaii at large to begin the creation of the patient-centered medical home model of care. Through the model, 15 percent of HMSA’s reimbursements to health systems will be tied to quality and patient care.
Look for continued medical home expansion and collaboration among insurers and health systems, along with the utilization of electronic medical records to help coordinate care among Hawaii’s limited number of physicians. As the PCMH model of care becomes more popular, the need for physicians in the Aloha State will grow. Hawaii is currently short around 500 physicians, and an aging population is increasing the need for primary care in the state.
