New Orleans, LA Market Overview
HealthLeaders Interstudy, Nov 2011, Pages: 51
Since Hurricane Katrina devastated the New Orleans region, the healthcare industry has been reshuffled and reshaped with several new hospitals rising to replace those closed in the storm’s wake. Federal and state money poured into the market, but it remains an extremely challenging financial environment for community hospitals. Just as some have started to stabilize, they are losing their disaster relief funding this year as well as having their Medicaid reimbursements cut. While the recession has affected the city, New Orleans unemployment still remains lower than in many U.S. cities, but that hasn’t lessened the weight that health systems and physicians feel from serving the half of the city’s population that’s either uninsured or enrolled in Medicaid. Continued Medicaid will exacerbate the problem and lead hospitals to press harder for higher reimbursements from commercial payors, evidenced by the hard negotiations between the region’s largest insurer and second-largest hospital.
