Salt Lake City, UT Market Overview

HealthLeaders Interstudy, August 2011, Pages: 42

The Salt Lake City region is one of the youngest, healthiest markets in the United States, characterized by large families and a conservative, business-oriented culture. We predict little change in this landscape over the near term. No challengers appear to be positioning for a run at Intermountain. Legislators and state regulators are focused on enacting progressive healthcare reform, largely in a desire to take care of it themselves rather than have the federal government force reform upon the state. At the same time, state officials have filed a waiver request to convert Utah’s Medicaid program to an accountable care organization model, and the progress of building a clinical health information exchange for all stakeholders is moving forward steadily.

Questions Answered in this Report

The hospital and health systems sector is divided between the dominant nonprofit Intermountain Healthcare and several for-profit systems owned by national companies. Which hospital opened a new Breast Care Center in 2011? Which system is adding 156,000 square feet of space to its National Cancer Institute-designated cancer hospital? Which health system is partially physician-owned?

A fair portion of Salt Lake City’s physicians are part of local health systems or midsize independent groups. How quickly are physicians in this market converting to electronic medical records? Will there be a shortage of primary care physicians in the future? Are physicians organizing into patient-centered medical homes?

Managed care companies in the Salt Lake City market are able to offer their products on the Utah Health Exchange. How many employers and health plans are participating in the exchange, and what are the most common benefit designs being adopted? How popular are high-deductible health plans in this market?
