Syracuse, NY Market Overview

HealthLeaders Interstudy, December 2011, Pages: 50

The complexion of the Syracuse healthcare market is poised to change with the pending merger of Upstate University Hospital and Community General Hospital and recent acquisitions of physician groups by two health systems. Employment of physicians is likely to accelerate as health systems strive to protect their referral bases. As double-digit premium increases continue into 2011 despite resumption of prior approval by the state, employers are shifting a larger portion of health insurance cost to employees. Leading health insurers in the Syracuse area are pushing new health plan designs to emphasize wellness or to provide a bridge between copay plans and high-deductible plans. Layoffs of state employees are likely because of a state budget crisis. In 2010, a regional health information exchange is scheduled to begin enabling hospitals to exchange patient data with five physician groups in a pilot project.
