Executive Summary
THE PHARMACEUTICAL MARKET: SLOVENIA - REVIEW
In per capita terms, Slovenia is the richest country in Central & Eastern Europe (CEE), with spending per head at least double that found elsewhere in the former Communist countries of the region. Although the economy contracted in 2009, for the first time in 16 years, economic growth returned in 2010 and the economy is set to increase between 2012 and 2016. Over two-thirds of funding is channelled through the compulsory health insurance system.
Slovenian pharmaceutical production is dominated by two companies, Krka and Lek. Both Krka and Lek play a major role in the Slovenian market and the overall Eastern European market. On 27th October 2011, Krka announced that a new plant for manufacturing solid dosage forms (OTO) had been opened, increasing Krka's production capabilities. The investment into a new production plant was valued at 91.0 million euros (US$122.7 million), and will increase production capacity to 2.5 billion tablets, film-coated tablets and capsules per year.
In February 2010, Lek opened a 430m² modified protein manufacturing facility, which will be used to produce epoetin alfa drug substance for the biosimilars marketed by Lek’s parent company, Sandoz. Epoetin alfa was among the first biosimilars to be marketed in the EU. Sandoz invested US$3.8 million in the Menges site, which will become a global supply point for Sandoz’ modified proteins. Lek previously opened a 2,800m2 Biopharmaceuticals Development Centre in October 2007 and Slovenia’s first manufacturing plant for recombinant technologies in February 2004. Krka and Lek are also seeking to expand their presence in the USA and in the emerging EU generics markets. Lek has had better success in Western markets since 2002, due largely to the Novartis buy-out, and now appears to be pulling significantly ahead of its rival.
