Company Profile: Telefónica CTC
Pyramid Research, Inc, March 2004, Pages: 18
Telefónica CTC, Chile’s incumbent local operator, has transformed itself in the past decade from a former local loop monopolist to a dynamic multi-service provider, competing for market share in every telecoms market in the country. This change, however, has not come easy. The days of high profitability and double-digit revenue and subscriber growth are behind. From 2000 to 2002, Telefónica accrued hefty losses, a worrying pattern that it was able to reverse in 2003.
At present, Telefónica CTC is facing contracting local and long-distance markets, as well as increased competition in growing markets such as Internet, datacoms and mobile telephony. Moreover, we do not expect the regulatory outlook and the upcoming Tariff Decree to be too positive for Telefónica CTC, implying more pressure on revenues and profits going forward. Nevertheless, CTC is increasing its market share in growing markets such as Internet, datacoms, mobile and even long distance, pointing to a more successful strategy of diversification in the coming years.
