Encyclopedia of Infectious Diseases: Modern Methodologies
John Wiley and Sons Ltd, Aug 2007, Pages: 747
This book was developed out of the understanding that advances in infectious disease research are dependent upon the development of novel multidisciplinary, integrative approaches. It bridges the fields of molecular epidemiology, genetics and evolution, and infectious diseases through its presentation of exciting novel approaches to the study, surveillance and control of infectious diseases. It highlights the state-of-the-art, enabled by powerful technologies such as molecular biology, bioinformatics, and satellite detection. Chapters represent a wide range of approaches, reviewing current knowledge, gaps, and challenges ahead. It focuses on practical information, offering a thorough overview of the latest hot topics with strong emphasis on medical applications.
The book is organized into five main parts. The first is an introductory section looking at current infectious threats such as HIV/AIDS and malaria. The next part addresses evolution of pathogens and the relationship between human genetic diversity and the spread of infectious diseases. The following chapters highlight the most promising modern methodologies for molecular identification, vector control, satellite detection, surveillance, modeling, and high-throughput technologies. The final sections look at more specialized topics, including bioterrorism, world market and infectious diseases, and antibiotics for public health.
Michel Tibayrenc, M.D., Ph.D., is Founder and President of the society Molecular Epidemiology and Evolutionary Genetics of Infectious Diseases. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Infection, Genetics & Evolution. Dr. Tibayrenc is director of research in the unit on Genetics of Infectious Diseases at the IRD (L'Institut de recherche pour le developpement) Representative Office, French Embassy, Bangkok, Thailand. He is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
