Analyzing Nuclear Power in Brazil

Description: Electricity consumption in Brazil has grown strongly since 1990. Per capita consumption is 2235 kWh/yr. Nuclear energy provides four percent of the country's electricity - about 13 billion kWh per year.

In 1970 the government decided to seek bids for an initial nuclear plant. The turnkey contract for Angra-1 was awarded to Westinghouse, and construction started in 1971 at a coastal site between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

Angra-1 suffered continuing problems with its steam supply system and was shut down for some time during its first few years. Its lifetime load factor over the first 15 years was only 25%, but since 1999 it has been much better. Angra-2 has performed well.

The 1224 MWe Angra-3 unit was part of the same contract as Angra-2 and was designed to be a twin of it. While 70% of the equipment is on site, construction has not started. Eletrobras is seeking a private partner with $1.8 billion to complete it and as of mid 2006, government resolve to complete it appears to be firming.

The report - Analyzing Nuclear Power in Brazil - by Aruvian's R'search, explores the importance of nuclear power in today’s world, with Section One being dedicated to Understanding the Basics of Nuclear Power. The report looks at the basics of the nuclear industry that is, how a plant works, analyzing and understanding the fuel cycle, the various components which are involved in the working of a nuclear power plant, and much more. Economics, issues and barriers, and other such factors are also explored in-depth in this report.

This offering includes a complete analysis of the Brazilian Nuclear Power Industry, including an analysis of the nuclear power stations in Brazil, the major Brazilian players in nuclear power, and much more. Industry profile, industry developments, technological developments, non-proliferation issues, Uranium fuel cycle developments, and lots more information is included in this research report. This research offering is a comprehensive A to Z guide on the nuclear power industry in Brazil.
