The energy released from the gas owing to the pressure decrease is used by the turbo-expander to power a compressor, which assists recompress the gas to pressure or coercion. The cold gas (160 °F) (107 °C) is then injected into the de-mechanized column at a temperature and pressure that maintains the majority of the ethane-plus liquid. The methane is boiled out as the liquid descends and is heated, and the fluid becomes thinner and thinner in methane. To ensure that the bottom liquids have a sufficient Reid vapor pressure (RVP) or methane content, heat is injected to the bottom of the tower using hot output waste gas from the compressors. Cryogenic plants have the greatest liquid recovery levels due to the lower temperatures that are achievable.  Based on the gas composition and the desired result of liquids recovery, a variety of different combinations are possible. This is expected to take some time to determine whether the turbo-expander is the optimum option for extracting ethane and heavier HCs from natural gas.
