The Cancer Clock
John Wiley and Sons Ltd, Sep 2007, Pages: 312
Cancer is the second biggest killer in the world, and almost every family has had either direct or indirect experience of it. Although there are many texts written on the various individual aspects relating to cancer, there has not been a single book that covers, even superficially, the complete broad area of cancer and that is able to provide the reader with a complete overview of the various aspects associated with the disease.
The Cancer Clock offers a comprehensive overview of cancer as a single topic and provides information on the disease as a whole. The book is an all-encompassing account of all the key aspects related to the disease from initial diagnosis through to treatment and care and the different support mechanisms available. Carefully divided into three key parts, the first part of the book focuses on the genesis of the disease through environmental, lifestyle and socioeconomic factors and genetic origins of the disease.
The second part moves on to consider early disease, diagnosis, disease development and drug discovery with a reference to oncogenomics, proteomics, metabolomics as well as combinatorial chemistry techniques and the discovery of chemotherapeutic agents from plant extracts. The final part of the book discusses standard treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy along with current developments into treatment, targeted therapeutics, antibody therapies (such as Herceptin and Zevalin) and novel chemotherapy agents. Finally the book examines patient care, pain control, nursing in cancer patients and clinomics with the final chapter looking at the psychological aspects of the disease, from coping with the knowledge of having cancer to coping with the side effects of the treatments, family support and dedicated support groups.
Written in a clear, accessible manner, the book will be richly illustrated throughout in full colour and will also include problems/solutions, self-assessment questions, summary sections and information boxes all designed to enhance student understanding. The book will be an ideal starting point for students of pharmacy, pharmacology, the biomedical sciences and other related disciplines where an understanding of cancer as a whole is required.
