High-Density Lipoproteins: From Basic Biology to Clinical Aspects
John Wiley and Sons Ltd, Sep 2007, Pages: 553
In 20 chapters by biological and biomedical researchers, the current knowledge on high density lipoprotein (HDL) is summarized. The biological part discusses the formation, turnover, and regulation HDL as known from recent studies. In the medically oriented part, the numerous functions of HDL in controlling blood cholesterol and its role in common diseases - such as diabetes, cancer and metabolic syndrome - are analyzed, including strategies for pharmaceutical intervention.
This book meets the long-awaited need for a comprehensive overview of the biological role of HDLs. Edited by one of the pioneers in HDL and cholesterol research, this monograph summarizes current knowledge on HDL turnover, regulation and physiology. Clearly structured, the various sections cover HDL structure, formation, secretion and removal, as well as plasma metabolic factors. The biological activities and clinical aspects are equally discussed, as is the impact of HDL on common diseases and their prevention.
About the Author
Christopher Fielding is Neider Professor of Cardiovascular Physiology at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF). He graduated from University College in London (UK) where he also received his PhD. After appointments at Oxford University and at the University of Chicago, he joined the faculty at UCSF in 1971, being appointed full professor in 1985. Professor Fielding is a pioneer in the HDL field who developed many of the current concepts in HDL metabolism and its role in health and disease.
