Biophotonic Sensors and Smart Fiber Optic Sensor Networks

Description: Examine biophotonic sensor opportunities from many perspectives including; government, industrial, university and venture capital. The markets, technologies, commercialization, and roadmap trends are presented in addition to promising areas for R & D.

A roadmapping workshop entitled “Biophotonic Sensors and Smart Fiber Optic Sensor Networks” was held on August 17 and 18 in Rochester, NY. There were approximately 65 attendees from government agencies, industry, universities and venture capital firms.

The objectives of the workshop are fourfold:
- Define the state of the art of biophotonic sensors
- Identify opportunities for biophotonic and fiber optic sensor integration
- Expand, refine and quantify the photonic sensor development roadmap
- Expand and refine the role of OIDA in the development of the photonics sensor industry

Imaging technologies that aid sensing were included within the scope of this workshop.

The workshop was designed to examine biophotonic sensor opportunities from many perspectives including; government, industrial, university and venture capital. The markets, technologies, commercialization, and roadmap trends are presented in the body of the report as well as the role for OIDA and promising areas for R & D. Appendix A gives the venture capital perspective. The agenda is in Appendix B with attendees listed in Appendix C.

OIDA Technology Roadmaps
The OIDA technology roadmaps identify technologies required to address known or envisioned market opportunities. Emphasis is on pointing to bottlenecks or barriers in technology or in the regulatory or legislative environment through comparing needs and available resources.

Although the major emphasis of the roadmap activity is on the first five years, some projections are expected to span a 10 to 20 year horizon. In examining longer-range technology evolution, roadmaps might also point to new emerging markets and signal areas where fundamental limits are reached and therefore paradigm shifts might be expected.

Technology roadmaps are developed with the help of experts representing industry, national laboratories, and academia. OIDA seeks to achieve a consensus view based on open discussions in a workshop environment that helps to network the North American industry. This in turn facilitates the sharing of resources and the formation of partnerships and alliances.

The primary output of the roadmaps is a set of recommendations for decision makers in industry and government to influence resource allocation, R&D funding, etc., leading to improved market share and domestic job creation. Technology roadmaps also provide a business focus to government sponsored R&D projects and help building a consensus on the future impact of emerging technologies.
