Tablet coating is the process of coating a tablet's surface with a coating material to achieve the desired properties of dosage form over the uncoated tablet. The tablet coating is done to mask the color, odor, or taste of the tablet, to incorporate another drug to fight the side effects of the original drugs, to enhance the expiration date, encapsulate the tablet with a smooth surface, to protect the gastric environment of the human body, and to control the release of the drug in the human body. The tablet coating is also used for improving product stability, and to increase the release properties of drugs.

Coating of the tablet is done by using cellulosic polymer (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, methylcellulose, and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose), vinyl polymer (polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyvinyl pyrrolidone-polyvinyl acetate copolymers, and polyvinyl alcohol), and acrylic polymers (Eudragit). Tablet coatings are required for producing delayed-release tablets, and sustained-release tablets. There are various types of tablet coatings, used in the pharmaceutical industry including sugar-coated, film-coated, and enteric-coated for achieving desired pharmacological action. Producing medical tablets with a coating has become more popular in the pharmaceutical industry nowadays.

Major factors driving the growth of the tablet coatings market include a rise in technological advancements in the equipment of tablet coating, an increase in the prevalence rate of chronic diseases such as heart diseases, cancer, ischemic stroke, and aneurysm, which required sustained and delayed release of drug, propel high adoption of tablet coatings for desired pharmacological action at particular interval of time. For instance, nitroglycerin sustained-release tablets (used for angina, and coronary artery disease) are available in the market under the brand name NIPTRO.

For instance, according to World Health Organization, Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death globally, taking an estimated 17.9 million lives each year. It has been estimated in 2020 that around 17.9 million people die each year from CVDs, an estimated 31% of all deaths worldwide. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, every year, about 805,000 people in the U. S. have a heart attack. This led to increasing demand for sustained-release tablets for cardiac disease.

However, unfavorable reimbursements as well as complications such as high costs associated with coated tablets in comparison to conventional tablets are expected to hamper the market growth. On the contrary, unmet medical demands in developing countries and lucrative opportunities in emerging economies are expected to create huge opportunities for fibrin sealant manufacturers worldwide in the future.

Furthermore, the healthcare business is projected to witness growth, owing to a rise in surgeries such as heart bypass surgery, cancer surgeries, solid tumor surgeries, neurothrombectomy, and organ transplant surgeries, and a rise in awareness regarding the use of tablet coatings for controlling the release of drug. This is anticipated to offer remunerative opportunities for key players to invest in the market during the forecast period.

In addition, an increase in R&D investments in the discovery & development of advanced tablet coatings, an increase in tablet coatings-assisted clinical research studies, a significant rise in capital income in developed countries, and a rise in key strategies adopted by key players such as acquisition, collaboration, and agreement strengthen the demand for tablet coatings in the market.

For instance, in October 2020, Evonik launched EUDRAGIT ready-to-use powder premix to improve the processing, appearance, and swallowability of oral drug products with an immediate release profile. EUDRAGIT IR ReadyMix White is fast and easy to process, with a high-gloss coating delivering an elegant optical appearance and superior swallowability outcomes.

Executive Summary

According to this report, titled, 'Tablet Coatings Market,' the tablet coatings market size was valued at $2.2 billion in 2021, and is estimated to reach $4.1 billion by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 6.6% from 2022 to 2031. Tablet coatings is a process by which an outer, essentially dry layer of coating material is applied to a surface of the dosage form. This helps confer specific benefits to drugs over uncoated drug forms. Coatings may be applied to oral dosage drug forms such as powders, particles, granules, pellets, and crystals. With time, tablet coatings have become much more advanced. The tablet coating is employed to improve the mechanical resistance of the tablet, and to protect against the gastric environment.

There are three main types of tablet coating: sugar coating, film coating, and enteric coating. Various classes of pharmaceutical coating polymer, which include cellulosic, vinyl, and acrylic, are used in tablet coating depending on the requirement of drug release. Compliance with good manufacturing practices (GMP) is facilitated. The availability and development of new tablet coating materials and better equipment designs contribute toward the launch of improved products.

Growth of the tablet coatings market share is majorly driven by a surge in the prevalence of chronic diseases such as diabetes, inflammatory bowel diseases, ulcer, and asthma that require sustained release and delayed release of drugs for desired therapeutic action. In addition, the surge in the geriatric population who are unable to remember taking a dose after a particular interval of time, and are more vulnerable to chronic diseases has increased the demand for sustained-release tablets and drives the growth of the tablet coating market.

For instance, according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Atlas Tenth edition 2021, approximately 537 million adults (20-79 years) are living with diabetes. More than 1.2 million children and adolescents (0-19 years) are living with type 1 diabetes, 541 million adults are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and 1 in 6 live births (21 million) are affected by diabetes during pregnancy.

The rise in availability of sustained-release and delayed-release tablets using tablet coating for the treatment of diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, ulcer, asthma, and other various diseases drive the growth of the tablet coating market.

For instance, Mesalamine delayed-release tablet is used to treat mild to moderate ulcerative colitis; Lornoxicam Sustained release tablet 16 mg is used for arthritis; Acebrophylline Sustained release tablets 200 mg is used to treat asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder; Metformin Hydrochloride sustained release tablet is used to treat diabetes; Aceclofenac Sustained release tablet IP 200mg is used for rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and osteoarthritis; Progesterone Sustained release tablets 200 mg is used to restore menstrual cycles and Paracetamol Sustained release tablets 1000mg for body ache, fever.

In addition, the high adoption of technologically advanced equipment for tablet coating, and an increase in awareness toward the benefits of using tablet coatings in the effective treatment of diseases fuel the growth of the tablet coating market.

Initially the COVID-19 outbreak had a negative impact on the tablet coatings market due to the potential risks associated with COVID 19 and restrictions implemented by governments throughout the globe. However, COVID 19 has resulted in individuals to take more care of their lifestyle and dietary habits due to the risks associated with COVID 19. Hence, this has resulted in the increased adoption of vitamins, minerals and dietary supplements which has further boosted the market for tablet coatings market.

On the basis of polymer, the acrylic segment is expected to witness the highest CAGR during the forecast period, owing to an increase in the use of colon drug delivery systems and an increase in development and advancements in acrylic polymer.

On the basis of type, the enteric-coated segment is expected to witness the highest CAGR during the forecast period, owing to the rise in the prevalence of colitis, Inflammatory bowel disease, and the increase in awareness regarding the use of enteric coating for targeted drug delivery in emerging economies.

On the basis of functionality, the sustained release segment generated maximum revenue in 2021 and is expected to witness the highest CAGR during the forecast period, owing to the rise in the prevalence of diseases such as asthma, diabetes, and hypertension that require sustained and controlled release of the drug, and increase in awareness regarding use of sustained release formulation for the treatment of diseases.

On the basis of end-user, the pharmaceutical segment was the highest revenue contributor to the market in 2021 and is expected to witness the highest CAGR during the forecast period, owing to the rise in the prevalence of diseases, increase in a number of pharmaceutical industries, and increase in a number of geriatric populations. The rise in healthcare expenditure also boosts the Tablet Coatings Market growth of the pharmaceutical segment in the tablet coatings market.

Depending on the region, Asia-Pacific is expected to witness the highest CAGR during the forecast period, owing to a surge in geriatric populations who require more sustained-release tablets for diseases and a rise in awareness regarding the use of tablet coatings for delayed release.
