Generators convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. The mechanical energy can come from a hand crank, an internal combustion engine, compressed air, or a reciprocating steam engine. An internal combustion engine generates mechanical energy, which is then transformed into electrical energy by a generator assembly using either diesel, gasoline, propane gas, or natural gas. Generators are made to deliver AC or DC electricity temporarily. They provide backup or emergency power for use in military, domestic, industrial, and commercial applications. A conventional generator is powered by a gasoline engine.

A hybrid generator is commonly combined with a diesel generator and combines two sources of energy to generate power via a battery-charged system. The generator is expected to charge the battery and serve as the primary power source by using renewable sources such as solar or wind. When the energy levels begin to deplete, the diesel generator will automatically step in to produce and supply power or electricity.

Military portable generators can be moved to any location where a continuous power supply is not available. Portable generators are convenient to manage during warfare and when the grid network breaks down. Portable generator sets are offered in a variety of power levels to meet the needs of customers in military applications operations. Military communication systems create a resilient, adaptable, secure, and mobile backbone to meet all of the tactical commanders' current and future communication needs. The development of tactical area communications systems and mobile air traffic control towers simultaneously create demand for the power supply required for the communication systems, which is expected to drive the growth of the market during the forecast period.

The military generator market is segmented on the basis of type, installation type, application, fuel type, capacity, and region. By type, it is bifurcated into AC Generators and DC Generators. By installation type, it is classified into stationary generators and portable generators. By application, it is categorized into communication system, air defense system, field hospitals, field camps/accommodation, lighting, and military vehicles. By fuel type, it is segregated into diesel, natural gas, and hybrid/others. By capacity, it is divided into up to 60 KW, 61 to 250 KW, 251 to 500 KW, 501 to 1000 KW, and above 1000 KW. By region, the market is analyzed across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and LAMEA.

Executive Summary

The Military Generator Market is likely to experience a significant growth rate of 4.7% from 2022-2031 owing to increasing market demand from defense sector.

A diesel engine and an electric generator are combined to create electrical energy in a military generator. Most diesel compression-ignition engines are made to run on diesel fuel, although certain models can also run on natural gas or other liquid fuels. Defense systems increasingly rely on power generating technologies as they become more sophisticated and agile. Military generators fulfil challenging performance, logistical, and mobile power needs of military applications.

Key factors driving the growth of the military generator system market include rise in territorial disputes, growth in defense budget of the military, and technological advancement in diesel generators. Various nations throughout the world are investing much in the development of hybrid generators. The Tactical Hybrid Energy System introduces the tactical military unit to the green energy revolution. Combining traditional energy sources including diesel generators and grid power with renewable sources such as solar and wind power, as well as enhanced storage and power management capabilities, allows military users to save more than 50% of the diesel fuel provided to the field. Owing to these features, many armed forces are investing in the development of hybrid power generators and microgrids. For instance, in June 2021, according to Frank Bohn, electronics engineer at the U.S. Army's Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance — or C5ISR — Center, the U.S. army is looking into innovative technology, such as microgrids, to power command posts and division tactical operations centers more effectively, these systems can range from 10 to 100 kilowatts. Moreover, in April 2022, the U.S. Department of Defense announced to build a new prototype nuclear micro-reactor generator at the 890-square-mile Idaho National Laboratory.

Command vehicles, reconnaissance vehicles, troop transports, and infantry fighting vehicles all have generating sets, which are necessary for maintaining a mobile hospital or delivering energy to support troops and computer systems in military camps. In addition, modern military vehicles necessitate a variety of sensors, communications, data, and information systems, all of which require electrical power. Development and deployment of military vehicles are expected to drive the growth of the segment. For instance, in October 2022, Allison Transmission, a leading designer and manufacturer of conventional and electrified vehicle propulsion solutions for tactical wheeled and tracked defense vehicles accelerated the development of electrification technology for integration into the U.S. Army’s ground combat vehicle fleet. This development also included improved electrification system for tracked Infantry Fighting Vehicles and the Main Battle Tank.

Region wise, it is analyzed across North America (the U.S., Canada, and Mexico), Europe (Germany, France, UK, Russia, and rest of Europe), Asia-Pacific (China, Japan, India, South Korea, and rest of Asia-Pacific), and LAMEA (Latin America, Middle East, and Africa).

The key players profiled in the study include Caterpillar CMCA Group of Companies, Cummins Inc., Fischer Panda, HDT Global, KOHLER SDMO, Leonardo DRS, SFC Energy AG, The Dewey Electronics Corporation, and Rolls-Royce plc.
