Statistics: A Biomedical Introduction

Description: Techniques of statistics are fundamental to planning and evaluating scientific studies. Featuring a new foreward written by Dr. Hollander.

Statistics: A Biomedical Introduction provides the basic methods of introductory statistics, focusing on real-life examples from medicine, public health, and the natural sciences. Probability, hypothesis testing, estimation, analysis of contingency tables, regression analysis, and analysis of variance are presented in a nonmathematical format and provide a basis for understanding statistics. This foundation is expanded to include such important topics in biomedical statistics as design and implementation of clinical trials, statistical evaluation of diagnostic tests, methods of randomization, and methods of analyzing survival data with incomplete observations. Applications, rules of thumb, and guidelines for the use of various statistical procedures are based on extensive experience.

Chapters begin with the presentation of data sets arising from studies in the biomedical sciences. Statistical procedures are introduced and applied to the basic data sets and conclusions are then stated. Statistics: A Biomedical Introduction presents real-life biomedical examples and problems, simple explanations, a relevant choice of topics, and easy-to-follow procedures in a way that requires no more than an understanding of elementary algebra. Biologists, public health workers, and students in public health, medicine, and the natural sciences are introduced to biomedical statistics through a format that provides a sound coverage yet remains informal and nonmathematical.
