CMDB Access and Federation Standards - An Advisory Note
Enterprise Management Associates, March 2007, Pages: 4
The Configuration Management Database (CMDB) is the centerpiece of the IT Infrastructure Library’s (ITIL) IT Service Management (ITSM) framework. In theory, the CMDB is a comprehensive centralized repository that details infrastructure components (Configuration Items or CIs) and their relationships. In practice, such a comprehensive database has thus far proved elusive.
The majority of large enterprise management vendors have developed entities described as CMDBs and incorporated them into their products. Virtually all of them offer a limited technology perspective; that is, by definition, limited to the technology managed by the vendor’s products. As such, the notion of a comprehensive centralized repository of configuration information is still a visionary concept.
Although the idea behind the CMDB has been in existence since ITIL’s inception in the 1980’s, its lack of definition has contributed to widespread confusion as to its exact nature, purpose and execution. Meanwhile, as IT continues to become more heterogeneous, distributed and complex, the need for such centralized repositories has become even more pressing. This paper details the struggle to move the idea of a comprehensive CMDB beyond theory and into reality.
