Advisory Note: Open Source Products in the SOA and Application Management Spaces

Open Source is impacting the development of enterprise management products, and in doing so, is yielding big benefits for both vendors and IT organizations. From the vendor perspective, embedding Open Source into solutions can reduce development time and save development dollars. Vendors can then pass on cost savings to their customers, resulting in very competitive pricing for robust management solutions. Customers benefit from lower cost products, and often from licensing cost savings when 'add-ons' such as databases and report generators come from the Open Source world instead of from proprietary solutions. This paper provides snapshot perspectives of four vendors who are using Open Source in their solutions in very different ways.
