Advisory Note: SOA and the CMDB
Enterprise Management Associates, June 2007, Pages: 3
EMA has written extensively about both Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and about the IT Infrastructure Library’s (ITIL’s) Configuration Management Database (CMDB). Ironically, as the industry evolves, the two concepts become more and more intertwined, especially when viewed from the perspective of managing today’s complex business services.
The loose coupling characteristic of SOA services results in applications that are 'virtualized' from underlying technology. This creates a fundamental problem for traditional application management platforms that rely heavily on manual configuration to 'model' business services running in the enterprise. EMA believes that a federated CMDB System could potentially become the 'Rosetta Stone' for configuring the context models that are necessary to automatically map and manage SOA business services.
