Federation is an idea that is becoming fundamental to IT. In the IT space, federation is the process of combining multiple technology elements into a single virtual entity. Federation is being driven by complexity, and by IT’s need to make sense of technology systems that have sprawled to unprecedented scale and have become extremely expensive to maintain and manage.

This article discusses the idea of federation in context with today’s emphasis on integration and standards. This interrelationship is important to IT organizations because those that understand them can make better decisions about purchasing enterprise management products. It is important to vendors because those that understand these interrelationships will likely build them into products. Products grounded in standards and interoperability will have a longer shelf life than those that do not, especially as customer product choices become increasingly standards-based.
