Advisory Note: CMDB Developments Indicate Progress
Enterprise Management Associates, Aug 2007, Pages: 3
Over the last several years, the Configuration Management Database (CMDB) concept has been gaining momentum with increasing numbers of IT organizations adopting IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) best practices. CMDB has many touch points within IT including management processes, product interoperability, data integration and even organizational culture. And, according to Enterprise Management Associates (EMA) research, CMDB awareness is surpassing that of its parent, ITIL. CMDB has developed deep roots in the IT management industry.
This year CMDB is experiencing even more positive growth. ITIL has released Version 3 which provides clarification to the definition and role of CMDB. The CMDB Federation (CMDBf) has released a draft specification with the intent of standardizing the query and registration services for CMDBs and management data repositories (MDRs). And IT vendors continue to innovate and release new capabilities for their CMDB wares. These interdependent developments demonstrate continued growth for the CMDB.
This forward progress is fundamentally driven from the needs of IT. IT organizations continue to show increased demand for sharing and leveraging management data, integrating products, improving IT staff efficiency and moving up the maturity curve from cost center to business enabler. There is recognition that a single source of truth for configuration data along with integrated IT management processes is a requirement for fulfilling these demands. The IT challenges are real, they must be addressed and CMDB is a core component of the solution.
