Having worked in security operations for most of my career, I can speak firsthand about the frustrations of attempting to implement secure practices into an organization. It is an unfortunate reality that IT security is a perpetual battlefield that forces security departments to square off, on the one hand, with the threat environment, and on the other with the major decision makers within their respective organizations in the difficult political balancing act of matching people and technology against risk. This conflict has lead IT to view security in many cases as a roadblock for innovation—and the sad reality is that in many cases, that perception is accurate. Most currently implemented security strategies only aggravate this perception. These strategies often serve to defeat efforts to think outside the box and create approaches that actually secure our environments, as opposed to giving the illusion of security based on stringent best practices and standards that have little effect on actual risk exposure.

This paper functions as a primer for thinking about IT security, not in terms of adding technological innovation to plug the holes of the existing environment, but in leveraging innovation to redefine the environment to eliminate the holes themselves. In particular, this paper will discuss the opportunities presented by Software as a Service models and virtualization as two technologies that are still early enough in their adoption to have such an impact on changing the IT environment.
