A Consumer’s Guide to MEMS & Nanotechnology
|
Description: |
The first book to extensively detail how, and why, various types of MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems) devices and nanomaterials are being put to use in commercial products, both the public and industry will benefit greatly from this book. With detailed examples of products from nearly 500 companies, A Consumer’s Guide to MEMS & Nanotechnology is an excellent overview of the current state of MEMS and nanotech commercialization. The public will find the conversational approach to a technical, complex topic especially helpful. Organizations involved in the research, manufacture, or use of nanomaterials and MEMS devices will gain insight into the competitive landscape and potential market opportunities.
Summary Divided into two parts, the first half of the book examines the commercial history of MEMS and nanotechnology, their evolution into the marketplace, and how material science (nanotech) and engineering (MEMS) have become intertwined. Dozens of MEMS devices and nanomaterials are discussed in detail—including how they work, what makes them unique and why they’re useful. The second half of the book provides countless examples of real-life applications of MEMS and nanotechnology in cars, homes, consumer electronics, cosmetics/personal care, clothing/footwear, jewelry/accessories, sporting goods, healthcare/medicine, food production, oil exploration and more.
Back Cover
Are you curious why sunscreen, which used to be white, is now clear? How motion-sensing video games work? Why your car knows when to deploy the airbags? How liquids bead up and roll off some surfaces? Why silver nanoparticles are such a big deal?
A Consumer's Guide to MEMS & Nanotechnology takes you into the micro-world (and beyond) where you'll discover an amazing range of unimaginably small sensors, structures, materials and more. Explore what they do and how they work; then learn why they're making everyday products smaller, smarter, lighter, stronger and more unique than ever before.
Did you know that the ancient Egyptians were among the first to use nanoparticles in cosmetics? That MEMS sensors can monitor pressure--right inside your heart? Find out where the technologies of tomorrow are being applied in real products today. |

In such a big world, how did we get this small? A Consumer’s Guide to MEMS and Nanotechnology describes how this aspect of science has permeated all aspects of our modern lives. The book highlights applications in automobiles, homes, consumer electronics, personal care, clothing, and healthcare and
medicine, as well as others. After reading this book, I was unable to think of a way that MEMS and nanotechnology did not impact my life. I certainly realized that I take for granted the things I cannot see, as it is hard to fathom that what is described in these pages is even possible. It is not only possible; it is probable. In regards to MEMS and nanotechnology, the book describes our past, our present, and our future. What do we understand as nanotechnology, and what is it exactly? Present in the book’s words is a genuine respect for the scientists and engineers who develop these technologies and their applications. Written with university students in mind, this book also serves the high school student showing an interest in science and technology. Ms. Bourne does a phenomenal job of making this aspect of science approachable. Along with its conversational format, the images and examples make the information accessible and downright fascinating. If you are a person who likes to know the how and why, it will be difficult to put down this 287-page book.
