Social computing and universal communications lead Lotusphere agenda

Ovum, February 2008, Pages: 8

IBM’s Lotus division released a deluge of product and strategy information at its annual Lotusphere users’ conference in Florida in mid January. At this year’s show, the themes of unified communications and collaboration (UC2) and Web 2.0/social computing stole center stage from the well-established Notes/Domino and WebSphere Portal product lines. Dwight Davis and Steve Hodgkinson believe Lotus brings considerable strengths to both the UC2 and social computing markets, not the least of which is the IBM unit’s ability to integrate this functionality with its popular messaging and portal products. However, Lotus also faces significant challenges - especially when it comes to social computing - in guiding IT managers into these emerging technology frontiers.
