World Carrier Switch and Router Markets 2008
Frost & Sullivan, March 2008, Pages: 16
High Bandwidth Applications and Intense Competition within the Service Provider Market Drive Growth
Factors such as high bandwidth applications and increasing competition within the service provider market and from multi-system operators continue to provide momentum for the growth of the world carrier switch and router markets. The year 2006 was characterized by an especially high year-over-year growth of 27.3 percent as Carrier Ethernet and network upgrades witnessed global activity. In 2007, primarily due to the mergers and acquisitions in the North American market, the year-over-year growth rate decreased as compared with 2006, but still remained high at 18.5 percent.
While most Carrier Ethernet products were able to maintain double-digit growth, legacy product types such as the Multiservice ATM Switch and Broadband Remote Access Server (B-RAS) declined in 2007. "Broadband Remote Access Server product type continues to see a decline due to some service providers’ preference for a more distributed architecture," notes the analyst of this research service. "Frost & Sullivan estimates that in the emerging markets and in Brownfield deployments there will be some opportunity for the B-RAS product type, but the long-term trend is toward a distributed B-RAS architecture."
APAC Market Witnessing Robust Growth
While the U.S. market constituted 41.5 percent of the world revenues in 2005, its share declined to 39.4 percent in 2007. Meanwhile, the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region, which made up 32.7 percent of the world revenues in 2005, saw its share increase to 34.0 percent in 2007. Shadowing these two was the Asia Pacific (APAC) market, which witnessed the most year-over-year growth in 2006 and 2007. Frost & Sullivan estimates that in the near to medium term, APAC and EMEA will continue to witness double-digit growth rates. North America is however expected to retain the position of the leading geographic region by revenue share.
Overall, Cisco Systems retains it market leadership position; however, its market share has declined from 46.9 percent in 2005 to 43 percent in 2007. "In the same period, the market share of the ‘Others’ category increased from 24.8 to 27.4 percent," says the analyst. "This is a very strong indicator of the active participation of vendors in global opportunities."
