POC Testing for Infectious Diseases Gains Traction in the European Molecular POC Testing Markets

Point of care (POC) diagnostics market has experienced great success due to its benefits of advanced technology, quick turnaround time and minimal manual interference. Although molecular diagnostics is a rapidly growing segment in the global in vitro diagnostics (IVD) market, the true potential of POC molecular test is yet to be realised. Nevertheless, infectious disease detection at the POC is expected to give the market a boost as this application is gradually picking up steam - especially with medical authorities working towards reducing the occurrence and recurrence of these diseases.

'After the success of HIV testing in POC format, the platform is being increasingly used to detect other sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea,' says the analyst of this research service. 'The adoption of these tests at screening centres, community clinics and other decentralised settings will accelerate the growth of POC infectious disease testing.'

The current focus of researchers and universities is developing polymer disposable chips that can perform multiparametric tests at the POC level. This is expected to be a cost-effective solution for the detection of infectious disease agents. The introduction of additional POC tests for infectious disease detection will facilitate the screening of fatal diseases at public health centres. Market entrants will do well to be aware of this opportunity and introduce relevant technologies and skills in the market.

This Frost & Sullivan research service titled The Emerging European Molecular POC Testing Markets analyses the POC molecular and infectious disease markets, their competitive structure and strategic viewpoint. In this research, Frost & Sullivan's expert analysts thoroughly examine the following applications: infectious disease testing, cancer diagnostics (molecular oncology) and pharmacogenomics.
