North American Breast Imaging Markets

Description: This study identifies technology trends, forecasts future changes in market measurements, and discusses specific challenges facing industry participants and strategic recommendations targeted to overcome these challenges for the North American Breast Imaging Market. The major geographic division covered is North America (including the United States and Canada).

Market Overview

Alarming Rise in Obesity-related Cancer Cases Spurs Growth in the North American Breast Imaging Markets

The total North American breast imaging equipment market has seen considerable growth since 2006. One of the contributing factors is the alarming rise in the obese patient population. As studies have confirmed the connection between obesity and cancer, obese postmenopausal women have an augmented risk for breast cancer, and mammography procedural volumes in North America are set to escalate. Considering the age-associated characteristic of malignancy, screening of elderly women is imperative for early diagnosis and evaluation. Imaging and diagnostic procedures are steadily gaining importance as early detection dramatically improves survival rates.

Advancements in screening and diagnostic procedures have evolved a great extent and sophisticated digital mammograms have addressed the shortcomings of earlier methodologies, such as image quality, radiation exposure, and the difficulty in imaging for women with extremely dense breasts. The variety of screening options available includes ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and nuclear imaging. Breast ultrasound screening, which brings high expectations for the market, is awaiting approval by the U.S. Federal Drug Administration (FDA). "The use of ultrasound has advantages over other imaging options that uphold great benefit to the patient," notes the analyst of this study. "It offers numerous advantages as it does not expose the patient or clinician to radiation nor does it require the use of a radioactive agent, making it non-invasive for the patient."

Advent of FFDM and CR Technologies Open New Vistas for Vendors in the Imaging Space

Though analog mammography has reached technological maturity, full field digital (FFDM) X-ray mammography technology is providing fresh impetus for the market. "There are many advantages to the use of advanced technology such as lower radiation dose exposure for dense breasts without compromising the image or accuracy of the diagnosis along with a wider range or display of the entire breast," notes the analyst. "Use of digital technology also enables image manipulation, which can magnify the areas of interest as well as decrease procedural time, increasing efficiency." Computed radiography (CR) has successfully penetrated the market since its approval in July 2006. CR mammography enables the transition to digital mammography since a digital image can be attained using an analog system with the use of a reader. The CR solution is unique and highly affordable, coming as two different customizable options to suit specific applications depending on workflow.

Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) is an emerging technology that is expected to overcome the limitations of predecessor technologies, ensuring better diagnostic outcomes with less false positives. The trials show promise, but much depends on acceptance on the part of healthcare providers as well as the patient population. The technology is moving closer to attaining approval from the FDA. Trials have proved that DBT offers enhanced digitized images and boosts reader accuracy levels. As the technology in the imaging sector becomes increasingly sophisticated, it is imperative for vendors in this space to leverage new technology approaches to advance in the marketplace.
