SIM Cards Power the Latin American Smart Card Industry
The adoption of smart card technology in Latin America has been driven by SIM, payment and government market segments. Microcontollers, which accounted for more than 75 percent of the revenues in 2007, have been leading the Latin American smart card industry since 2004. Latin America presents great opportunities to increase the uptake of smart card applications such as EuroPay, MasterCard, Visa (EMV) by large and medium-sized banks in Brazil and Mexico. The increasing penetration of EMV cards in these two countries has encouraged its adoption in other main countries in the region and they are expected to expand their initial pilots before 2011.
"Meanwhile, the transit segments present a large number of opportunities for contactless technology (mainly due to the prevalence of the low-cost MIFARE standard cards across Latin America), expanding awareness about the benefits of smart cards," says the analyst of this research. "Key government agencies are evincing interest in these technologies, mainly for use in education and social programs in Brazil and Mexico and in some Central American countries such as El Salvador and Puerto Rico."
Overall, the Latin American smart cards market is highly competitive and price-oriented, especially in the mature and secure segments of global system for mobile communications (GSM), banking, and public transport. Moreover, with the bigger projects involving not just huge investments but also high coordination and logistic challenges for their actual implementation, market participants' local presence and support are vital – especially in sensitive application segments. "The development of key value-added applications and the offering of constant and personalized support can negate the price factor and act as major catalysts for the adoption of smart card technology," notes the analyst.
