Aspen is Africa's largest manufacturer of generic drugs, and the leading supplier of generic products to both the private and public sectors in South Africa. Additionally, the company is a major supplier of branded pharmaceutical and healthcare products to the southern African market. The company is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

In FY2010, Aspen reported revenues worth R10,146.6 million (US$1,341.7 million), up by 20.2% over the prior year. Net profit rose by 46.2%, reaching R1,978.5 million (US$261.6 million).

Aspen has agreements with companies including Bristol-Myers Squibb, Boehringer Ingelheim, Merck Sharp & Dohme, Roche and GlaxoSmithKline, allowing it to produce generic versions of those companies' antiretrovirals.

In January 2005, the FDA announced it had granted tentative approval for a copackaged antiretroviral drug manufactured by Aspen. The tentative approval allowed the product to be available for procurement under the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

In March 2010, India's Indoco Remedies reported it had licensed out its intellectual property dossiers to Aspen. The deal encompassed a number of ophthalmic products, and would extend to 30 countries from emerging markets.

In May 2010, Aspen made overtures to acquire the pharmaceutical business of Australia's Sigma Pharmaceuticals. In August 2010, the deal entered its final phases, with Sigma agreeing to sell.
