Canned Food in Russia

The canned food sector is predicted to witness a decline in sales of 1.2% and 3.3% in value and volume terms, respectively, in 2003. This decline is due to a shift in consumer preferences towards frozen or fresh products, as purchasing power increases. Some subsectors, such as canned meat and canned fish, are considered old-fashioned, which has contributed to the sector’s decline. Unit prices of meat, fish and vegetables have, however, increased slightly, which has led to value sales of canned food declining more slowly than volume sales.
