Carrefour was formed in 1959 by the Defforey and Fournier families as an out-of-town hypermarket. The leading French company concentrates solely on retail activities. In 2002, 59% of its sales revenue was generated by its hypermarket businesses, which are the company’s first, traditional activity. It pioneered and popularised the hypermarket concept in France and expanded largely through organic growth until the late 1990s, becoming Frances leading hypermarket operator.
