Many ingredients were present in 2015 for a good performance in overall sales of spirits. However, the industry consensus at the end of the year was that the category could have performed better. Emerging segments and trends from 2013/2014, notably the successful niche of flavoured whisky-based spirits, were expected to bear fruit in 2015. However, after the euphoria of 2014 due to the impressive number of innovations, 2015 remained only a reasonable year for sales of spirits.

Consumption falls even further in 2005
With total per capita consumption falling to just over 83 litres in 2005 and declining throughout the review period, France is a country where the market for alcoholic drinks is shrinking. There are a number of reasons for the ongoing fall in consumption, including growing health concerns, a more severe drink-driving policy and – above all – changing lifestyles, which have meant a reduction in drinking occasions, with the drinking habits of older consumers not being replicated in younger generations.
