Robust growth from rising demand
China's GDP growth stood at 9.9% in 2005 over the previous year, according to China's National Bureau of Statistics. Small-scale bird flu outbreaks in some areas in China did not have a markedly negative impact on the robust economic growth in 2005. Rising demand for soft drinks formed a major growth engine for the market, resulting in total volume growth of almost 13% in 2005. Among all products within soft drinks, fruit/vegetable juice, bottled water, RTD tea, RTD coffee and Asian speciality drinks all enjoyed double-digit percentage volume growth. However, due to overall low disposable incomes, off-trade volume sales of soft drinks still dominated in China.
