Sales of alcoholic drinks in Colombia reached an estimated volume of 1,441.5 million litres in 2002, having registered an increase of 3.6on 2001. Sales surged to Col$8,739.3 billion in 2002, representing growth of 1.1% in constant value terms over the review period. This modest performance can be attributed to a variety of factors, one of which is the Colombian pesos weakening against the US dollar. A second factor is the increase in the number and variety of products available on the market, especially in wine. With the arrival of new, competitive products at various price points, general alcohol prices fell considerably; however, the consumer base grew as a result of new trends and promotional activity. Our alcoholic drinks analysis investigates both on-trade and off-trade trends; the performance of key national specialities and new product developments for beer, wine, spirits, cider/perry and FABs.
