ABL1 (Abelson murine leukemia viral oncogene homolog 1; c-ABL) belongs to the SRC tyrosine kinase family. Mutations within the kinase domain of BCR-ABL1 constitute the most frequent mechanism of resistance in patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia treated with imatinib or the second generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors. The malignant potential of this oncoprotein, the drug-resistant mutations and its ability to affect multiple signaling cascades, makes it a desirable therapeutic target.
