This strategic study cuts across all drinks sectors - alcoholic drinks, soft drinks, hot drinks and dairy drinks - to give a global perspective on key questions facing the drinks industry:

- Volume sales of drinks increased by 17.7% over the review period, while value sales increased by a much slower 0.2%.
- Growth in volume sales was principally driven by increasing consumption of packaged drinks in developing markets, where per capita consumption is low and potential for growth immense
- In developed markets, the opposite pattern was apparent. There was little room for volume growth, which led manufacturers to focus instead on encouraging consumers to trade up
- Perhaps the most influential factor in the drinks market was rising consumer health consciousness. This had a considerable impact on growth patterns.
- Another key factor determining growth patterns was that of image. Drinks that were targeted at a young, urban consumer worked well if they were effectively positioned as fashionable
