Private label growing fast
Retailers such as Carrefour, RT Mart, Welcome and Tesco actively promoted their private label products to compete with branded goods over the review period. Private label packaged food sales in Taiwan increased from 4.4% in 2002 to 6.6% in 2004. The influence of private label is especially big in rice, instant noodles, bottled water and chilled juice. As the Taiwanese consumers' behaviour was extreme towards premium purchases and price-elasticity in recent years, retailers are expected to expand private label development to secure their market share in the future.
