This “Acrylonitrile/Acrylic Staple Fibre Global Analysis ” report contains 55 pages packed with up-to-date statistics and objective analysis of the trends in demand and Supply on the entire value chain beginning from Acrylonitrile to acrylic fiber. The Report presents tabulation and graphical presentation of trends in demand and supply of the acrylic chain across countries from 2003 to 2007 and projections up to 2013 for Acrylic Staple Fibre. Major investments and capacity shut down are also captured extensively. An analysis of processes, end use and derivatives along with the latest producer-wise capacity, are added feature of this report.

Acrylonitrile capacity expansion has been sluggish in recent years. Between 2000 and 2007, only 600,000 tons were added. Thus, as of end of 2007, the total capacity stood at 6.2 million tons. In 2007, 217,500 tons were added as against the deletion of a similar size capacity in 2006. The sluggish addition to capacity has been reflected in the surge in capacity utilisation. In 2007, it clocked a rate of 82% as against 79% in 2006 and 60% a decade ago. Capacity utilisation had peaked 94% in 2003 when almost 300,000 tons were put out of production in the preceding two years.

Demand for acrylic staple fibre is on a consistent decline since 2001. The last robust growth was recorded in 2002, when consumption increased 7% annually. Over the last decade, the annual rate of increase in consumption has been negative. In 2006 and 2007, consumption declined significantly by 9% and 6% respectively.

Slower growth in demand for acrylic staple fibres is expected over the next five years. In view of the current market conditions and lack of innovation in usage, ASF consumption is expected to grow by 2.3% per annum between 2008 and 2013.
