Telefónica Peru Complements Its Access Network with CDMA 450 to Provide Fixed Telephony
In the third quarter of 2008, Telefónica Peru launched CDMA 450 after being awarded 10MHz in the 450MHz band in a beauty contest process. In Peru, the 450MHz band was used in the past for private radio services, but government authorities decided to change the attribution of this frequency in 2007 to fixed telephony and then offer this spectrum in 2008. The CDMA 450 fixed telephony service is commercialized under the brand “Fono Ya.” We believe that CDMA 450 enables Telefónica to extend coverage in Lima and Callao, defend market share and benefit from a separate fixed wireless access for fixed telephony and potentially broadband.
