Spain Food and Drink Report Q4 2008
Business Monitor International, November 2008, Pages: 72
Spain Food Drink Report provides independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on Spain's food and drink industry.
Spain’s soft drink and bottled water market is large, given the relatively small population, with per capita consumption among the highest in Europe. This is partly due to an aversion to drinking municipal water, both for safety and cultural reasons, and also thanks to the warm climate. Products from The Coca-Cola Company (Coca-Cola) control around 55% of the market, while PepsiCo, Danone and J. García Carrión are among the contenders competing for the remaining market share.
Data from the Union of European Beverages Associations reveal that between 2001 and 2006 Spanish consumption of soft drinks increased by 24% in volume terms. This growth was driven by an increase in sales of bottled water and fruit juice/juice drinks which increased by 37% and 31% respectively. Over the same period, sales of carbonated soft drinks stagnated, increasing by only 2% in volume terms.
As in most of Western Europe, these trends have been driven by increased health consciousness and concerns about obesity. This has led to stagnation in sales of carbonated soft drinks, which are generally viewed as unhealthy, and provided a boost to healthier alternatives such as fruit juice and bottled water. The 2% rise in volume sales of carbonated soft drinks was over a period when the Spanish economy experienced an unprecedented level of growth, underlying the weakness of the sector.
BMI generally expects soft drink sales to continue along the same path over the next five years. However, the slowing of the Spanish economy, could temper the rate of growth within the bottled water and fruit juice/juice drink sectors slightly. In addition, increased environmental concerns over the ecological impact of bottled water could discourage consumption.
Therefore over five years to 2012 total consumption of soft drinks is expected to increase by 13% in volume terms. Volume sales of bottled water and fruit juice/juice drinks are forecast to increase by 18% and 17% respectively, while consumption of carbonated soft drinks is expected to continue to stagnate in volume terms.
In all categories value growth is expected to outpace volume growth thanks to a trend towards premium and added-value products. For example, in the bottled water category, increased consumption of flavoured and fortified waters will boost value sales, while in the fruit juice category a trend towards more expensive ‘100% juice’ products and smoothies will drive up sales.
