Turkmenistan-Russia Planned Gas Pipeline
Summary
Turkmenistan, the gas-rich nation in central Asia, has signed a deal with Kazakhstan and Russia to build a new Caspian Sea gas pipeline. The total length of this pipeline would be around 510.0 Km with an initial designed capacity of 20 billion cubic meters (Bcm) per annum. The pipeline will bring gas from Central Asia to Russia via Kazakhstan and interconnect to the Russian pipeline system, which in turn, will supply the gas to the European markets of OAO Gazprom (Gazprom). This deal is slated to provide enough supply options to Gazprom, the Russian gas monopoly, to fulfill its contractual supply agreements with its European customers. This pipeline deal will be a direct competition to the Nabucco Pipeline Project, which proposes to carry natural gas from the Caspian region to Central Europe through an alternative route, bypassing Russia and Ukraine.
