Market Opportunities in Biodefense Research: Trends & Forecasts
|
Description: |
Overview
Biodefense research is one of the fastest growing markets for life science suppliers. Though there are many sources of information on biodefense spending and research priorities, this report, Market Opportunities in Biodefense Research: Trends & Forecasts, is different because the report asks hundreds of current and future biodefense researchers about the products they use. This is the only report that identifies what current, funded biodefense researchers are buying, what they still need, and how life science suppliers can best meet those needs.
Billions of dollars are being invested to support basic research on potential agents of bioterrorism as well as the development of vaccines, diagnostic tests and therapies to detect and counter the effects of a bioterrorist attack. Despite this investment, relatively few tools and techniques are specifically designed for biodefense research, often leaving scientists to adapt products and methodologies currently designed for other uses.
Trending Comparison and Forward-Looking Analyses
Building upon our 2004 report on biodefense, our 2006 report, Market Opportunities in Biodefense Research: Trends & Forecasts, will provide important insights into how the market has changed in the past two years. Additionally, we examine the expected growth rate of biodefense research as a specific segment of the life science industry. Understanding how the market has changed, and how it is likely to grow in the future, will enable life science companies to establish themselves as preferred suppliers for biodefense applications. New for this year, the report also examines how likely researchers are to adopt products specifically designed for biodefense purposes. This analysis allows suppliers to understand whether they are better served by developing customized biodefense products or simply repositioning existing products. The report examines, in particular, both product- and customer-specific forces that affect the market penetration rate of biodefense products. This is an area of critical insight for any supplier who wishes to make inroads—or maintain their current market position—in this market.
Benchmarking Research Areas and Technologies Used
In addition, this report provides benchmarking data on the major tools and techniques used in biodefense research, both in aggregate and within specific applications. We also identify the major objectives of biodefense research in the U.S. market. Understanding the current state of the market will allow suppliers the insights necessary to assess how their products and services can meet the needs of this unique group of scientists. The report also provides an essential overview of the current obstacles experienced by biodefense scientists and what technological developments they identify as necessary to advance their research. Suppliers who can use this information to help scientists overcome their current obstacles or provide the technological innovations to advance research will be in a strong position in this fast-growing market.
Supplier-Specific Information
This report identifies the top suppliers as indicated by biodefense researchers, both for products that are general to life science research and for products that are specifically designated for biodefense applications. Our analysis reveals multiple opportunities for companies to establish themselves as credible suppliers for biodefense research.
Report Objectives
Based upon the opinions of current and future biodefense researchers, this report:
- Provides a comparison between the 2004 and 2006 surveys - Examines the overall objectives and specific targets of biodefense research in the U.S. - Identifies the predominant tools and techniques employed in biodefense research by market segmentation analysis - Measures the growth rate of biodefense research as a defined market within the life science industry - Assesses the likely rate of market adoption of new biodefense-specific products based upon customer and product forces - Describes current obstacles encountered by scientists and technological developments required to advance biodefense research - Highlights opportunities for life science suppliers to establish themselves as credible suppliers of research products to the biodefense market |

Methodology |
Methodology
529 scientists completed a 35-question survey conducted between September 14 and 27, 2006. The electronic questionnaire was fielded to registered members of The Science Advisory Board, an online community of more than 31,000 scientists, physicians and healthcare professionals from around the world. The Science Advisory Board is divided into two panels (Research and Clinical) and “convenes” regularly via the World Wide Web (www.scienceboard.net) to voice their opinions on a wide variety of issues relating to biomedical research and clinical technologies. These experts—representing all aspects of the life sciences and medicine—have agreed to make themselves available to participate in our online research activities. The Science Advisory Board members who participated in this study were drawn from the Board’s Research Panel. In Question 1, respondents were asked to indicate whether they currently conduct biodefense research, plan to in the future, or do not plan to at all. Respondents who did not plan to ever conduct biodefense research were directed out of the survey. Question 2 was only answered by respondents who plan to conduct biodefense research in the future. Questions 3, 18, 19, 20, 29, 30 and 32 were only answered by respondents who currently conduct biodefense research.
