South Korea Food Drink Report provides independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on South Korea's food and drink industry.

Given the current global economic difficulties it is perhaps not surprising that this quarter has seen no significant expansion or mergers and acquisitions activity in South Korean. BMI expects GDP growth for the country to be 3.5% in 2008, dropping to 1.5% in 2009 and in this climate of uncertainty and weak consumer confidence companies are fearful of expanding. However, per capita food consumption is predicted to reach a value of US$1,131.65 by 2013, signifying a compound annual growth rate of 10.4% and indicating there are still opportunities within South Korea. For the time being, however, negativity largely dominates the outlook across the retail, beverages and food sectors.

One company feeling the pinch in Q408 was UK retail giant Tesco, which has announced a decline in recent underlying sales by its South Korean operation for the 10 weeks to 1 November 2008.
