German Organic Vegetable Revenues Forecast to Triple by 2006

Revenues of the German organic vegetables are forecast to triple between 2000 and 2006. The market is showing rapid growth as a result of the BSE crisis sparking consumer concerns for food safety. The market is forecast to grow by 34 percent in 2001 with demand outstripping supplies for many products.
The BSE crisis has pushed organic foods into the limelight due to consumers questioning food safety, and the promotion of organic agriculture by the new agricultural minister. Although the German organic vegetables market is the largest in Europe in terms of revenues, consumption per capita is low. The study shows that the organic vegetables market is an estimated 2 percent of the vegetables market.
The major sales channels for fresh organic vegetables are the natural food sector and direct sales. Natural food shops, which mostly comprise organic food shops, accounted for 41 percent of all organic vegetable sales in 2000. Direct sales in the form of farmers markets and farm shops account for over a third of sales for some organic vegetables. Lack of marketing, limited product ranges in a low concentration of stores, were responsible for the supermarkets to account for a mere 21 percent of all organic vegetable sales in 2000.
This strategic study investigates the fresh organic vegetables market in Germany, and provides revenue forecasts and competitive information for the major product segments. Analysis is provided on the distribution channels, suppliers, and retailers of organic vegetables with market shares given for the main products.
