2008 Report on Environment-Friendly Toilets (EFT) in China

Water shortages in most of the regions in China have presented great challenges in front of for traditional flush toilets, especially in some scenic spots or other places that are short of water and power supplies. EFT has a great future in China because they are able to save a lot of water, and are clean and friendly to the environment.
So far there have been 110,000 public toilets in use in Chinas 28 large cities, which produce 30 million tons of human body waste every year with 90% of it flowing to the rivers or lakes of the cities. The cost would be about RMB10bn if those toilets are rebuilt into EFT. According to its 11th 'Five-Year Plan,' China was going to rebuild 22,800 public toilets, with 52% of all the older models being rebuilt into EFT by 2010. Specifically, eastern, northeastern, central, southwestern, and northwestern China would rebuild 95%, 38%, 45%, 88%, and 55% of their flush toilets respectively.
In addition, the total newly-developed body-waste disposal capacity in Chinas cities would be 21,000 tons/day, and by 2010, 78% of the body waste in China would be decontaminated based on the 11th 'Five-Year Plan.' Among the new capacity, eastern China would account for 9,600 tons/day, northeastern China 2,400, central China 5,500, southeastern China 1,700, and northwestern China 1,800. Considering the overall development trend of demography and municipal construction, 20,000-30,000 new public toilets are expected to be built through 2010.
On top of that, Chinas governments are making great efforts to promote EFT in rural areas of the country. According to Chinas Ministry of Environment Protection, the penetration rate of EFT in the country would reach 65% by the end of the 11th 'Five-Year Plan'
