Only few months ago, automotive industry in Southeast Europe seemed poised to follow the success of the industry in Central and Eastern Europe. New developments and expansion plans were presented and the capacity of the industry was expected to increase beyond the growing demands of the regional market. The crisis changed these plans but might have only postponed it as the region remains well placed to benefit from a future recovery.
The regional production capacities in the region exceed 600.000 vehicles at the moment but potential capacity might increase to almost 2.000.000 by 2012 if the announced investments would be implemented. On the other hand, there were almost 700.000 vehicles sold to the buyers in the region, half of it in Romania. Romania will reinforce its position as the most important automotive market in Southeast Europe.
