Market Dynamics 2001: Hormonals

Description: One of the causes of prostate and breast cancers is an imbalance in testosterone and estrogen (male and female hormones) levels in the body. Controlling the levels of hormones through the use of hormonal agents thus plays a key role in treating patients affected by these cancers. As with other cancer types, if treated early, the chance of survival is high. However, since prostate and breast cancer are two of the most prevalent cancers, affecting some 1.7 million males and 2.3 million females across seven major markets in 2000, respectively, these cancers remain leading causes of death. As a result of this large patient population, the cancer hormonals market should be an attractive target for pharmaceutical companies to pursue in terms of R&D. However, the market remains stagnant, with a distinct lack of competition with different classes dominated by few drugs. Market Dynamics 2001: Hormonals report examines the current hormonal products and the key factors that have and will have an impact on the competitive dynamics of the whole market. These factors are then analyzed in subsequent sections to forecast the sales revenues of hormonals products over the period 2001-2008.

Contents: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Scope

Datamonitor insight into the cancer hormonals market

Patent expiries of key agents will put intense pressure on cancer franchises over the next decade. To offset generic switching, significant differentiation amongst new products must be achieved. Current, late-stage pipeline products are unlikely to fulfill this requirement, hence, R&D investment should be increased and/or diversified.

Pharmaceutical companies' preferred strategy of maximising the commercial lifecycle of hormonal products has been to reformulate, or gain approval for new indications. With few innovative products expected to be launched into the hormonals market in the short to medium term, Datamonitor believes that such strategies will become ever more important in bridging a revenue gap sprung from insufficient innovation.

AstraZeneca's hormonal therapy, Arimidex (anastrozole) may provide a valuable alternative to tamoxifen. However, this will depend considerably on the company's ability to change physicians' attitude towards the use of aromatase inhibitors as first-line breast cancer and differentiation through reformulation.
