Strategic Perspectives 2001: Narcolepsy - Specific Drugs are Waking up the Market
Datamonitor, Sep 2001
Whilst narcolepsy is not a prevalent disorder, the recentsuccess of the first narcolepsy specific drug, Provigil(modafinil) has created interest in this previously neglectedmarket. With its superior efficacy and safety profilecompared to the previous gold standard treatment, theCNS stimulants, Provigil is expected to continue itssuccess for the foreseeable future. However, Provigil is only effective at treating one of thesymptoms of narcolepsy, excessive daytime sleepiness, and does not treat another commonly experiencedsymptom, cataplexy. Another narcolepsy specific drug,Xyrem (sodium oxybate), which is likely to be availablesoon, seems set to fill this unmet need and become verysuccessful in the future.
