The market of drill pumps may be segmented into piston and plunger pumps. Piston pumps were covering the largest market volume (the market share of about 65% in 2007 and over 68% in January-October, 2008) during the period under study. Stably higher demand for piston drill pumps in comparison to the demand for plunger drill pumps was reasoned by a lower cost of this type of equipment, longer wearability of details and a possibility to replace it more quickly.

Despite the growing number of international players in the Russian market, domestic manufacture covers over 70-80% of the market volume. The Russian market of drill pumps is characterized by rather high level of development: it offers the whole range of required equipment, high-quality products and affordable prices. An important factor is availability of aftersales service, which makes it possible to repair/ replace the equipment quickly. The main volume in the manufacture of Russian companies (over 90%) falls at drill piston pumps.

The experts predicted that in 2009-2010 the rates of the drill pumps market growth would be at the level of year 2008. However the global financial crisis that affected the Russian economy in the 4th quarter of 2008 has significantly corrected these predictions.

At the end of 2008 – beginning of 2009, most market participants were in abeyance. The main predictions for 2009 came down to the stagnation of the drill pumps sales volume (approximately up to 30% and more), reduction in the volumes of domestic manufacture and import, as well as to the fact that small manufacturers of drilling equipment would leave the market, etc. However, current estimates show that as soon as in 2010 prices for oil will reach the level of year 2007 and the volume of purchased drilling equipment will proportionally grow due to the increased drilling volumes. Overall, further development of the Russian drill pumps market will depend on how soon global prices for oil start demonstrating a stable growth and the Russian petroleum complex overcomes the impact of the financial crisis.
