SAP first brought out an MDM offering in 2003. This did not take off well, and in 2004 they decided to change tack by buying a content management software vendor called A2i, and scrapping their initial offering. SAP MDM is now built on the A2i platform, though it has been significantly extended since 2004.
SAP has around 750 MDM customers as of April 2008, but this is a rather misleading number since many of these are shipped as part of larger application deals but not deployed. The publisher estimates that around 200 customers are making some use of SAP MDM as of March 2008, with perhaps half of these in some form of production use.
